Following the introduction of the Explosives (Fireworks) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2002 in May 2002 you will need a fireworks licence from the Department of Justice (DOJ) before you can buy, keep and use category 2 (garden) fireworks.

Application forms and Explanatory Notes are available here, from your fireworks' supplier or by contacting the DOJ, Firearms and Explosives Branch -

Telephone (028) 9052 0057 or 9052 3150
Fax (028) 9052 0194

Completed application forms, giving applicant, display and fireworks details, should be returned to:

Department of Justice (DOJ)
Firearms and Explosives Branch
Castle Buildings
Stormont Estate

Payment of the licence fee can be made by cheque or postal order and should be sent to the DOJ with your application form. If it is inconvenient for you to pay this way, please telephone them and they can send you a bank giro invoice.

The licence fee varies depending on the number of spectators at the fireworks display -

  • £30 for less than 100 spectators
  • £80 for between 100 and 1000 spectators
  • £160 for over 1000 spectators

A licence will be issued to you on receipt of your fully completed application form and confirmation that your fee has been received.

Please note that the processing time, from the issue of an application form to the issue of the licence, can take up to 4 weeks, especially at Halloween. However every effort will be made to issue you with a fireworks licence for the date you require.
